Pyxis

Pyxis: The Discovery (Pyxis Series #1) by K.C. Neal
Release Date: November 4, 2011
ISBN13: 9780615549

Goodreads Synopsis:
Two worlds... one 16-year-old girl must learn to protect them both.
The nightmares haunting Corinne and her friend Mason hint at a universe that exists beyond the one they know. Her destiny is to protect a weakness between the two worlds, but her mentor is dead. As Corinne and Mason search for answers, she tries to ignore the sparks igniting between them, but can't deny she feels safe only when he's nearby. Will they find help before their nightmares break free?

Since this post is part of the blog tour for Pyxis, my review is included as well as some details on how YOU can win a Kindle!! Pretty amazing, right? I have a Kindle myself and it really is one of my best friends- especially when it comes to reading on the bus or travelling! So make sure you look for the details on that at the bottom of this post.

I have no idea why, but when I first heard about Pyxis I thought it was about fairies. No clue, but that's what I thought and I wasn't really interested. But I kept seeing a couple self-published authors whose books I had really enjoyed (and were very well done- I'm looking at you, Angeline Kace and M.R. Merrick!) promoting K.C. Neal's book and she was looking for reviewers... so one day I caved and signed up, just because I was curious and trusted the opinions I kept hearing.

Small spoiler: Pyxis doesn't seem to be about fairies! Shocking, right? I'm actually a tad relieved by that though, because it ended up being so much better!

  1. A visionary paranormal:
Pyxis doesn't line up with any paranormal stories out there- it's all brave, standing out there by itself. But it's confident and OWNS what it is - whatever that is, because I'm not even sure I really know what's going on yet. I find myself completely sucked in to the mystery which leads me to my next reason...
  2. Realistic and relatable:
Corinne reacts exactly the way you would expect her to, given the circumstances. Which also means, the book develops at a slower pace- think of a pace similar to a mystery, rather than most paranormal books. It makes perfect sense, and it's a welcome change in a book! You literally understand what Corinne is going through and feel as confused and lost as she does.
  3. You like being surprised:
Since blogging, some of my favourite books have been self-published; but they've been very carefully and well done. Pyxis is no exception to this, and I'm so happy I decided to give it a chance. I love surprises, and that's exactly what this was for me! Kind of like what I explained above, I had no idea what the book was about going into it... and I'm still trying to piece together the puzzle and discover that. But it looks like I'll have to wait for the next book for that! ;) Keeping this in mind - don't expect answers. You won't get very many.

If you're interested, make sure you take a look at K.C.'s website to find more information on where you can purchase Pyxis which is currently available as an e-book and will be coming out in paperback soon!

You can also find her on Twitter, Goodreads, and Facebook. :)

Okay, contest details:
The Kindle contest is open to U.S. residents only and you must be 13 years of age or older. All of the tour details and the Rafflecopter form are on her website here, and it ends on December 7th. LOTS of chance for bonus entries INCLUDING following my blog! :)

Good luck!

Excellent review, Brenna! I'm glad you enjoyed this too and you make great points. I loved that it moved slower and we got to enjoy the story and character development for once. And it was very original, too. Poor book standing all by it's lonesome lol.
